History if the Maquettes:
The Massac County Chamber of Commerce of Metropolis, Illinois
commissioned a 15 foot bronze statue of Superman to replace a smaller fiberglass structure. It took two year of negotiations with Warner Brothers for approval of the statue to be built in 1992. Metropolis leaders created an incentive to Warner Brothers by offering a better image of their icon by replacing the former fiberglass statue.

A detailed drawing was created and after a lot of discussions and input from Warner Brothers, the owner of the copyright image, the first step of the creation of this monumental statue was accomplished with their approval of the drawing.

The next vital step in the statue’s creation was sculpting in clay a smaller 26 inch clay image which is called a maquette. Many periodic photos were taken for Warner Brothers continual oversight and approval.

After the sculpting design was approved by Warner Brothers, the large 15 foot clay sculpture was created by Gary E. Smith.

Was the finish going to be a bronze finish with a patina glaze or would the
bronze be finished with a color that Superman was well-known for?

The foundry cast two bronze maquettes for the final decision to be made. One was a bronze patina glaze and the other was a pigment painted finish.

The two were presented to the Superman committee in order for them to decide on the final finish of the heroic 15 foot Superman.

The traditional color of Superman was the final chosen finish for the 15 foot statue that would be displayed in Metropolis, Illinois.

Because the copyright is held by Warner Brothers, these maquettes might be best suited for a private collection with no infringement intended but are for historical use only.
